Our Namesake

Maria Elena Martinez-Navarro (1914 - 2008)

Maria Elena Martinez-Navarro was born in 1914 in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico and gave birth to her daughter, Armida, in 1940. In the early 1950s, Maria immigrated to the United States and settled in San Antonio, Texas. She found work in a textile factory and, on refining her capabilities, opened a small business wherein she created custom blouses for the women of San Antonio.

In her spare time, Maria taught herself how to read and write in English by consuming English literature. However, as a proud Latina, Maria ensured her family’s assimilation was supplemented by remaining connected to their Mexican heritage, especially when her family expanded to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took every opportunity to prepare and share a home cooked meal, sew clothes for her grandkids, tell stories of her time in Mexico, actively support Mexico’s soccer team, and attend Mass.

Maria Elena Martinez-Navarro’s life came to an end in 2008 after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s. Until 2021, her memory lived in the heart of her family; however, through Maria’s Scholars, her legacy will touch the lives of countless others.

Maria’s decision to relocate to the United States was driven by her belief that education was the ticket out of poverty. She considered her move as the catalyst which held the potential to break the cycle of poverty for her descendents. Her intentions were realized within two generations when her great grandson graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and, through Maria’s Scholars, will serve as a catalyst for many others.
